Abstract
The goal of this exploratory research is to find out the trends in and motivations for participation in yoga among males and females in Hong Kong. 60 participants (45 female, 15 male) were answered a 20-question semi-structured questionnaire to obtained qualitative information about their perceptions of yoga. Moreover, four additional participants were interviewed. The findings revealed that gender and time invested in yoga do not correlate (p=0.230). Age determines participation in yoga (p=0.049) and the intensity of doing so (p=0.0000). 96.8 percent of the population considers yoga a female activity. Furthermore, age influenced the encouragement to participate in yoga based on the appearance of the yoga instructor (p=0.027). Most of the sample had no issue with an opposite sex instructor or fellow students.
