Dissertation Methodology Critique
This paper comprises a methodology critique on a dissertation on leadership styles and job satisfaction by Justin Ted Bateh of Walden University. In this research, the author sought to determine the correlation between leadership style and job satisfaction among faculty in Florida’s State University System. This paper includes a summary of the dissertation, a critique of the methodology section of the dissertation, and an explanation of the setting and sampling, and data collection in the proposed research.
Summary of the dissertation
The dissertation titled “Leadership Styles and Faculty Satisfaction in the State University System of Florida” sought to determine the relationship between the perceived leadership style of academic administrators and job satisfaction among university faculty members. The research which was conducted in 2008 was done using a quantitative research approach, where questionnaires were utilized in data collection. The research applied the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) to analyze approaches to leadership and the Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS) to evaluate employee job satisfaction. To measure job satisfaction, the Brayfield and Rothe Job Satisfaction Index was utilized. The data collected was then analyzed using SPSS and descriptive statistics.
According to Bateh (2013), higher education institutions require highly satisfied staff in order to ensure optimal performance and reduce turnover. Bateh, however, notes that 70% of U.S. employees are reporting dissatisfaction. With the launch of the New Florida Initiative, the need to ensure that new faculty assuming administrator roles have the right skills was apparent. In this regard, the research sought to develop a model that would predict how leadership styles at the university impact job satisfaction.
The goals of this study were to scrutinize the faculty perceptions of leadership styles and how they affect their satisfaction at work. Research questions answered sought to determine the following:
The correlation between perceived leadership style and faculty members’ job satisfaction
The correlation between perceived transformational leadership style and faculty members’ job satisfaction
The correlation between perceived transactional leadership style and faculty members’ job satisfaction
The correlation between perceived passive/avoidant leadership style and faculty members’ job satisfaction
The results of the research indicated that transformational leadership was better preferred among the respondents. Members who determined transformational and transformation leadership to be dominant had an increased satisfaction level while the same was lower among those identifying passive/avoidant leadership. These results showed a definite relationship between job satisfaction and leadership style.
This research is important to my work because its objectives are highly similar to mine and just like in my research the author seeks to determine how leadership styles impact job satisfaction. The researcher also conducts the study in a higher institution of learning, just like in my case.
The research design used by Bateh (2013) is highly similar to the kind of approach that my research will apply. Furthermore, his dissertation topic is very close to mine, both in terms of the study variables (leadership style and job satisfaction) and the study population (university leadership and faculty). A review of Bateh’s dissertation reveals a well-designed methodology approach in a majority of aspects including the research questions development, sampling design, data collection, and analysis methods. Given its high similarity to my current research, the research aspects including the methodology are also likely to be comparable. Therefore, I expect to use this study as a model of my own research to a great extent. A critique of the methodology is conducted below.
Definition of terms and concepts
Bateh defines the independent and dependent variables effectively, which is a major step towards ensuring that the research questions are adequately addressed, and that research objectives are met. I expect to achieve the same in my research whose topic is “The Relationship between the Faculty Members’ Perception of the Leaders’ Leadership Style And Job Satisfaction in University Of Dubai.” My research questions are listed as follows:
What is the relationship between faculty members’ perception of transformational leadership and job satisfaction at the University of Dubai?
What is the relationship between faculty members’ perception of transactional leadership and job satisfaction at the University of Dubai?
What is the relationship between faculty members’ perception of laissez-faire leadership and job satisfaction at the University of Dubai?
These questions are mostly related to Bateh’s except for the third question where his research addresses the passive leadership style while mine is laissez-faire leadership style.
My research focuses on two major concepts. The first concept is leadership style, and this is defined as the approach or technique utilized by a leader in guiding his or her followers. Under this concept, the terms defined include transformational leadership which refers to the style where the leader takes an active role in leadership, using his influence to shape the organization’s culture and encourages employees to pursue shared goals by taking the character of a role model. Transactional leadership is the second term, and this refers to the leadership style where the leader focuses on achieving set goals and ensuring that activities are done according to the required criteria. The second concept use in my dissertation is job satisfaction. This refers to the extent to which employees are contented with their work and hence their ability to be productive.
The definition of these concepts in Bateh’s dissertation is highly similar to mine. He defines the various leadership styles discussed in the dissertation including transactional and transformational leadership which are similar to what I will focus on. In addition, he studies leadership style and job satisfaction, which are the exact concepts included in my research.
How the study setting and subjects were chosen
The study setting is chosen on the basis of the new Florida Initiative, thus selection of the State University of Florida to conduct the research. Being a university that seeks to maintain high academic standards, the author recognizes that the new system will ensure that some faculty members who do not have adequate leadership skills are promoted into administrators. The research is timely as it identifies the perceived leadership styles among staff and this may be effective in promoting better leadership at the university. In the same context, the subjects consist of full-time faculty members at the university and academic administrators because they are best suited to provide relevant information to answer the research questions.
In conducting my research, I would select my setting based on the need for the University of Dubai to achieve better academic outcomes. This means that I would emulate the settings and selection of subjects. The concepts of my research and settings are highly analogous to those included in Bateh’s dissertation. Therefore, it is expected that I would utilize academic staff and administrators as the subjects of the study. This can be explained by the fact that my research will be conducted in a university setting just like in Bateh’s.
How data was collected and analyzed
The researcher uses questionnaires for data collection. These include the Multi-factor MLQ, originally coined by Bass and Avolio (1994), to measure the operational managers’ leadership approaches and the MSQ were utilized to measure the teaching staff’s job satisfaction. The use of questionnaires is an effective method of data collection in an empirical study (Jackson, 2015). This is because it gives the researcher a chance to collect empirical data which can be analyzed using statistical software. Unlike qualitative data collection methods, questionnaires are effective since they minimize the time for data collection and hence more time is used in the data analysis process (Jackson, 2015). Data collected using questionnaires is easy to clean hence gives accurate results which can be scientifically justifiable.
In my proposed research, I intend only to use primary data. The justification for this is that it is the only data which makes the researcher capable of studying participants’ attitude. Additionally, primary data is free from errors since the researcher can see the sources of errors and correct them during the data collection process (Jackson, 2015). I would also use questionnaires for the data collection, and in particular, the same MLQ used in this research. The MLQ has been widely used in leadership studies and has proven effective in understanding leadership characteristics.
Although the researcher had not stated well the design he has used in the study; it is evident that he intended to use descriptive research design. This is because he has used a descriptive survey (Baffour-Awuah, 2015). The main reasons for using this kind of a design according to the researcher was because it allowed for the easy collection of data ensuring that the objectives of the study could be met effectively. It is also applicable to accessing a large group of people and finally gives an opportunity to interact with the participants directly (Baffour-Awuah, 2015). This means it was the best method for him to use.
The choice of the researcher to use descriptive method is justifiable in this study. This is because the researcher used a large sample hence generalization of some information could be possible under the use of descriptive design (Atta and Nawaz, 2015). Also, the descriptive design is aligned with questionnaires since most of the time those questioners are focused on collecting empirical data which is well analyzed under descriptive statistics (Mackey and Gass, 2015). However, the researcher went ahead to analysis which was out of the design used. The analysis includes correlation tests between the different types of leadership styles.
Limitations of the study
The research by Bateh is limited by various factors in the methodology. Firstly, while the research identifies a correlation between job satisfaction and leadership style through logistic regression, the study’s results and job satisfaction may not have correlated. Secondly, the research focused on one university out of a possible 11 in the State University System of Florida and may not necessarily reflect a collective status. As a government-owned university, the results may not be replicated in the private university settings. Limitations such as the ones identified by Bateh are a common occurrence in many studies and researchers must find a way of overcoming them. To overcome the methodological limitation, my research will utilize a combination of statistical tools including SPSS to determine the correlation between the variables of the research. The limitation presented regarding the use of one university can be circumvented by demonstrating that universities go through similar challenges and that a majority of factors related to universities resonate across the institutions. The research at Dubai University will thus be a representation of most universities in the Middle East.
Setting, sampling, data collection and analysis strategy for my research
The setting of my proposed research will be based in Dubai University, with a sample consisting of faculty staff and administrators. These subjects are expected to provide the required data for the research, which includes the identification of how faculty members perceive leadership style of administrators. A sample of 100 participants will be selected using the random sampling technique. This sampling method is preferred due to its ability to ensure that all candidates get an equal opportunity to be selected as research participants.
Data collection is the process of obtaining the data for analysis. In my proposed research, I will use questionnaires and interviews for data collection. The use of interviews will be effective because they allow the researcher to study the attitude of the participants towards a given aspect hence making it easy to draw important information (Orkin, 2014). This is because interviews allow one to study the attitude patterns of the participants. It also allows, the interviewer access the quality of data from the interviews hence making him or her know the credibility and reliability of the results which will be obtained after analysis.
The data analysis strategy for my project will ensure that the results can be scientifically proven as correct and justifiable. First, the questionnaires which will be used for data collection will be checked for credibility and their relevance to the research questions. This will ensure the data collected is effective and can support in answering the study’s research questions (Orkin, 2014). It will also guarantee that the latitude of the research has been upheld hence no outside data will be collected. This will allow the investigator to obtain data from experienced participants who are well versed with the topic of study. Also, the interviews will only be administered within the chosen sample face to face. After data collection, the researcher will integrate it into digital data by entering it into an excel file. It will then be cleaned before analysis to eliminate any possibility of outliers. Finally, I will use SPSS for the data analysis process. Before analysis, the data will also be checked for normality. This will ensure that accurate results will be achieved.
In conclusion, this study has discussed a research project based on the types of leadership and job satisfaction. It has also deliberated the research’s strong points and weaknesses and proposed some remedies which could be done in a future research. Justification and how the prosed remedies will be applied have also been discussed. Finally, a discussion of the setting, data collection methods, and data analysis procedure for the prosed research has been included.
